The RDMS Veterans' Day and Academic Awards Assembly
On Monday November 9th, RDMS had a combination Veterans' Day and Academic Awards Assembly. It began with Mrs. Hall conducting her band as students entered. Mrs. Hollicker then welcomed everyone and we all stood quietly while Mr. Walton conducted the 6th Grade Chorus in a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Mrs. Hollicker then introduced the American Legion Color Guard Post 1 from Rockland, and members John Weatherby, Bill Lawry, Dan Bowen, Al Bowen, and Corey Conway. presented the colors. Mr. Gallagher led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and students from each grade level brought posters to the front of the assembly wth flags bearing the names of family and friends who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces. The American Legion Color Guard then retired the colors and the academic awards portion of the assembly began.
Team leaders at each grade level described the acheivements of their students and their pride in the large numbers of them who made the Honor Roll and High Honor Roll. Students were called and recieved recognition for their academic achievements. Students were also recognized for citizenship, responsibility, and generosity in the forms of Eagles of the Month, Agenda WInners, and students who have been "caught" doing good things for others without being asked. Mrs. Weatherbee distributed copies of The Joy of Cooking to all her ECS students and the assembly concluded with more excellent music from the RDMS Band as students left the gym. It was a very uplifting and successful assembly.
